There are two types of people in this world.

Those who admit they fart.
And those who pretend they don’t.

The truth is less poetic and more biological: we all do it. Every day. More often than we think. And the fact that your digestive system produces gas isn’t an embarrassing design flaw — it’s a normal, healthy, and completely inevitable function of being human.

Your body produces gas in two main ways.

The first is swallowed air. You take in small amounts of air when you eat too quickly, drink through a straw, chew gum, sip carbonated drinks, or talk while eating. Some of that air leaves through burping. The rest continues its journey through your intestines.

The second mechanism is far more interesting — and far more memorable in scent.

Trillions of bacteria live in your large intestine. This is your gut microbiome. They’re not there by accident. They help digest fiber, certain carbohydrates, and compounds your own enzymes can’t fully break down. While they do their job, they ferment leftover food particles. And fermentation produces gas.

Hydrogen. Carbon dioxide. Methane. And in small but powerful amounts, sulfur-containing compounds.

That’s where the smell comes from.

Most intestinal gases are actually odorless. The smell comes from tiny amounts of hydrogen sulfide and related sulfur compounds. It doesn’t take much for the human nose to notice.

That’s roughly half a liter to a liter and a half of gas. Every single day.

What happens if you hold it in?

In the short term, nothing dramatic. Gas can redistribute within the intestines. Some of it may be partially absorbed into the bloodstream and eventually expelled through breathing. Yes — technically speaking, a tiny portion of intestinal gas can end up being exhaled.

But if you regularly suppress it, pressure builds in the colon. You may feel bloated. Tight. Uncomfortable. Even painful. The intestines stretch, and stretch receptors send signals of discomfort to your brain.

No, it doesn’t “go to your head.” But it can definitely hurt.

Research suggests that repeatedly holding in gas can increase abdominal discomfort and may worsen symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

In other words, your body has a reason for wanting to release it. It’s a pressure regulation system.

Are people who “never fart” healthier?

There is no such thing as a human who doesn’t produce gas. If someone claims they never do, there are only two possibilities: either they don’t notice it, or their intestinal transit is slow and gas is released at different times.

Complete absence of gas is not a sign of superior health. In certain medical contexts, not passing gas can actually signal a bowel obstruction — which is a medical emergency.

Are there differences between men and women?

Biologically, gas production is similar. The differences are more social than physiological. That said, hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can affect intestinal motility, which may lead to increased bloating at certain times of the month.

Children often pass gas frequently, especially infants, because their digestive systems are still developing and they swallow more air. In older adults, changes in gut bacteria and slower digestion can alter frequency and odor.

Why do some farts smell stronger than others?

Diet plays a major role. Foods high in sulfur — eggs, red meat, broccoli, cabbage, garlic — increase sulfur compound production. High-protein diets may intensify odor. Food intolerances increase fermentation. Microbiome imbalances can shift gas composition.

And there are individual differences. Your gut microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint.

Now for the historical part.

Flatulence wasn’t always taboo. Historical accounts suggest that Roman Emperor Claudius reportedly issued a decree allowing people to pass gas at banquets to prevent physical discomfort. In other contexts, it was viewed as a sign of bodily relaxation or even digestive health.

Taboos are cultural. Biology isn’t.

How do you reduce excessive gas?

Not through denial.

But by:
– eating slowly
– limiting carbonated beverages
– identifying food intolerances
– gradually adjusting fiber intake (not eliminating it)
– staying physically active

Sometimes probiotics can help rebalance gut bacteria, although results vary from person to person.

A moderate amount of gas is normal. It means your gut bacteria are working.

And perhaps the most interesting part isn’t the biology — it’s our emotional reaction to it.

We’re embarrassed by something the body naturally does. We joke that if you don’t let it out, it’ll “travel up to your brain.” We laugh, blush, and try to suppress it.

But in reality, flatulence is evidence that digestion is functioning.

It’s not a defect. It’s not a failure of etiquette at the biological level. It’s a physiological process driven by bacterial fermentation and pressure regulation in the intestines.

Maybe maturity isn’t pretending it doesn’t happen.

Maybe it’s knowing when and where it’s appropriate.

Because in the end, your digestive system doesn’t care about social norms. It cares about pressure, fermentation, and microbiome balance.
