We use words like “kilogram” and “kilometer” so often that their structure barely registers anymore. Yet both contain the same small element: “kilo.”
It appears in measurements of mass, distance, power, energy and even in everyday online language, where 10K usually means 10,000.
So what does “kilo” actually mean, and why does it show up in so many unrelated words?
The answer is simple: kilo means one thousand.

“Kilo” Is a Prefix, Not a Unit
“Kilo-” is a metric prefix used to indicate that a unit has been multiplied by 1,000.
That is why:
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
1 kilowatt = 1,000 watts
1 kilojoule = 1,000 joules
The prefix itself does not tell us what is being measured. The unit that follows it does that.
A kilometer relates to distance because the base word is meter. A kilogram relates to mass because it includes gram. A kilowatt relates to power because the underlying unit is the watt.
“Kilo” simply changes the scale.
Where Does the Word “Kilo” Come From?
The prefix ultimately comes from the Greek word chílioi, meaning “one thousand.”
It entered the vocabulary of the metric system through French and became part of the standardized naming system used for measurement units.
This is why the same prefix can be attached to completely different units while keeping exactly the same numerical meaning.
Whether we are talking about meters, grams, watts or joules, kilo always represents a factor of 1,000.
What Do “kg” and “km” Actually Stand For?
The abbreviations are easier to understand once they are separated into their components.
In kg, the letter k means kilo and g stands for gram.
So:
kg = 1,000 grams
In km, the k again means kilo, while m stands for meter.
So:
km = 1,000 meters
The letter k does the same job in both cases. Only the unit after it changes.
Why Do People Say “a Kilo” When They Mean a Kilogram?
In everyday speech, “kilo” is often used as a shortened form of “kilogram.”
Someone may say they bought “two kilos of apples” or lost “five kilos,” and almost everyone understands what they mean.
Technically, however, kilo by itself is not a unit of mass. It is a prefix meaning one thousand.
The shortened form works because context fills in the missing word.
When someone says “a kilo of potatoes,” we automatically understand “a kilogram of potatoes.”
The Kilogram Is an Unusual SI Unit
The kilogram has one particularly interesting feature.
It is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units, even though its name already contains a prefix.
That makes it unusual.
For length, the base unit is the meter. From it, we form kilometer, centimeter and millimeter.
For mass, however, the official SI base unit is the kilogram rather than the gram.

Why Is It Written “kg” and Not “Kg”?
In scientific notation, capitalization matters.
The official symbol for kilo is lowercase k.
That means the correct forms are:
kg, not Kg
km, not Km
kW, not KW
An uppercase K already has another scientific meaning: it is the symbol for kelvin, the SI unit of thermodynamic temperature.
So although capitalization may seem like a minor detail, it can change the meaning of a symbol entirely.
Why Does “K” Mean Thousand on Social Media?
Outside formal scientific notation, K is commonly used as shorthand for thousand.

50K means 50,000
100K means 100,000
This convention is especially common in follower counts, salaries, prices, website traffic and financial discussions.
Its origin is the same metric idea: kilo means one thousand.
The capital K is widely used in informal and commercial contexts, even though the official SI prefix symbol remains lowercase k.
Kilo Is Part of a Much Larger System
The metric system uses many prefixes to show how large or small a measurement is relative to a base unit.
“Kilo” multiplies a unit by 1,000.
Other prefixes work in the opposite direction.
“Centi” represents one hundredth.
“Milli” represents one thousandth.
