Imagine spending days wondering whether someone you love is safe, with no way to reach them.
No phone calls.
No messages.
No answers.
That was the reality for Eric Olsen after Hurricane Matthew swept across Florida in October 2016.
His 87-year-old grandmother, Claire, lived alone in Palm Coast, one of the communities affected by the storm. Like thousands of other residents, she lost communication with the outside world as power outages and damaged phone lines disrupted the area.
Eric tried everything he could think of. He repeatedly called her home, hoping she would eventually answer. He looked for other ways to check on her, but emergency responders were already dealing with countless urgent situations across the region.
Waiting wasn’t an option.
A Creative Solution Born Out of Concern
Instead of giving up, Eric came up with an idea that sounded almost too simple to work.
He ordered a pizza to his grandmother’s house.
The food itself wasn’t what mattered.
When placing the order, he included a special request asking the delivery driver to call him after arriving at the address.
It was an unusual plan, but it was one of the few practical ways left to find out whether Claire was okay.

One Delivery Changed Everything
The order was assigned to Papa John’s delivery driver Lance Tyler.
When he arrived, he found Claire safe inside her home.
Knowing why the order had been placed, Lance did something that went far beyond delivering dinner. He handed Claire his cellphone so she could finally speak with her worried grandson.
After days of uncertainty, Eric heard the voice he had been hoping for.
His grandmother was alive.
She was safe.
The fear that had built up over several days disappeared in a single phone call.
Later, Eric joked that while emergency services couldn’t reach his grandmother because they were overwhelmed after the hurricane, a pizza delivery driver managed to get there in about half an hour.
Behind the humor was sincere gratitude.
Kindness Doesn’t Always Wear a Uniform
Stories about disasters often focus on destruction, rescue operations, and statistics. This one reminds us of something different.
Sometimes, the people who make the biggest difference aren’t performing dramatic rescues. They’re simply ordinary individuals who choose to help when the opportunity presents itself.
Lance Tyler wasn’t expected to become part of a family’s reunion that day. Yet by taking a few extra minutes and offering something as simple as his phone, he gave Eric something priceless: peace of mind.
A Reminder That Small Gestures Matter
The story quickly spread because it resonated with people everywhere. It wasn’t really about pizza.
It was about a grandson who refused to stop looking for his grandmother.
It was about a delivery driver who understood that compassion can be just as important as completing a job.
And it was about the unexpected ways people can look after one another during difficult times.
For most of us, ordering a pizza is part of an ordinary evening.
For Eric Olsen, one pizza delivery became the moment he learned that the person he loved most was safe.
