A holiday that looked ordinary from the outside
In the summer of 2014, Lars Mittank, a 28-year-old man from Germany, traveled to the Bulgarian coast with a group of friends. They were staying near Varna, in the popular resort area of Golden Sands, expecting nothing more than a typical beach vacation.
For most of the trip, everything appeared normal.
Friends later described Lars as calm, social, and engaged with the group. Nothing about his behavior seemed serious enough to predict what would happen only days later. Looking back, some noticed that he occasionally seemed distracted or ate very little, but at the time those details felt insignificant.
The atmosphere changed near the end of the vacation.
The incident before the disappearance
On July 6, 2014, Lars and his friends reportedly became involved in an argument at a bar. Public reports suggest the dispute may have started over football rivalries between German supporters.
At first, it sounded like the kind of confrontation that often fades away within minutes.
But later that night, Lars separated from the group and disappeared for several hours. When he returned, he reportedly claimed that he had been attacked by multiple men.
He appeared injured and later visited a doctor, who diagnosed problems involving his ear and advised him not to fly immediately because of a damaged eardrum. Lars was prescribed medication and told to wait before traveling.
His friends offered to remain in Bulgaria with him.
He refused and told them he would be fine on his own.
The night alone in Varna
After the rest of the group flew back to Germany, Lars checked into a smaller hotel in Varna, close to the airport.
This part of the story is where the case begins to shift from unusual to deeply unsettling.
During calls with his mother, Lars sounded frightened and increasingly paranoid. According to later reports, he whispered that unknown people were following him and trying to harm him. He even asked his mother to block his bank cards.
Security footage from the hotel reportedly showed him pacing through hallways, watching outside through windows, and behaving in a visibly anxious way.
At one point during the night, he left the hotel briefly and later returned. What happened during that missing hour has never been clarified publicly.
The airport and the final confirmed moments
On July 8, Lars arrived at Varna Airport to speak with the airport doctor and determine whether he was fit to fly home.
The physician later stated that Lars seemed nervous but physically stable.
During the consultation, Lars reportedly became increasingly uneasy while discussing the medication he had been prescribed. Then, according to the doctor’s account, a construction worker entered the room because work was being done nearby.
What happened next is the part millions of people would later watch online.
Lars suddenly panicked.
Without warning, he stood up and ran out of the office.
The disappearance captured on camera
Airport CCTV footage shows Lars sprinting through the terminal area before running outside.
He abandoned nearly everything behind:
his luggage, passport, wallet, and phone.
The video captures him crossing the airport grounds, climbing over a fence, and heading toward a more isolated area near the edge of the property.

That is the final confirmed sighting of Lars Mittank.
No verified trace of him has ever been found afterward.
Why the case became internationally known
Many disappearances remain mysterious because there are no images, no final moments preserved anywhere.
This case is different.
People can actually see the moment something changes in Lars’s behavior. The footage creates the disturbing feeling that whatever terrified him happened suddenly and intensely enough to make him flee without thinking about consequences.
Over time, numerous theories emerged.
Some believe he may have suffered a severe psychological episode intensified by stress, injury, exhaustion, fear, or isolation in a foreign country. Others believe he may genuinely have felt threatened after the altercation days earlier.
There are also more extreme theories online, but very few are supported by evidence.
The confirmed facts remain limited:
the argument, the injury, the anxious behavior at the hotel, the fearful phone calls, the airport visit, and the final CCTV footage.
Everything after that remains unknown.
Fear, panic, and survival behavior
Psychologists often point out that extreme fear can radically alter decision-making. When the brain enters survival mode, people may act in ways that seem irrational from the outside—running suddenly, abandoning belongings, avoiding help, or focusing entirely on escape.
That does not prove what Lars experienced.
But it may help explain why someone would leave behind their passport, money, and phone and run as if remaining where they were felt impossible.
At the same time, specialists are careful not to confuse interpretation with certainty. Without clear evidence, no explanation can be treated as definitive.
A disappearance without closure
Years later, Lars Mittank is still officially considered missing.
His family has continued searching and speaking publicly about the case. Reported sightings have surfaced in different countries over time, but none have been confirmed.
And that is what continues to make the story so difficult to forget.
Not only because a man disappeared in broad daylight…
but because the final minutes exist on video, clear enough to watch again and again, yet still not clear enough to explain what truly happened.
