There are rare people in the world who barely feel physical pain at all. Some are born this way because of unusual genetic mutations. Others lose the ability later in life due to severe nerve damage or neurological disease. Families are often taught to inspect the body daily for hidden injuries. Protective shoes may help reduce fractures and foot wounds. Dental care becomes extremely important because oral injuries are common and often go unnoticed.

Some patients also need close monitoring of body temperature because they may not recognize overheating correctly.

Researchers continue studying these rare genetic mutations in hopes of developing better treatments for chronic pain disorders and nerve diseases in the future.

The Strange Truth About Pain

Humans usually think of pain as the enemy. In reality, it is one of the body’s most advanced protection systems.

Pain tells us when to stop, when to seek treatment and when something inside the body has gone wrong. It prevents minor injuries from becoming catastrophic ones.

The rare people born without that warning system have helped scientists understand something most of us overlook every day: pain may be unpleasant, but without it, survival becomes far more difficult.
